Opportunities map according to Visa Atlas: most popular visa in 2026

The German Opportunities Map is developing into one of the most visible instruments for skilled worker immigration internationally. New analyses from VisaAtlas from September 2026 show the extent of international interest .
According to VisaAtlas, the German opportunities map was the most frequently accessed single visa guide on the platform in 2026. The data was analyzed for the period from January 1st to September 16th, 2026.
The guide to the German opportunities map received 58 percent more hits than the second-placed guide , which dealt with the Saudi Arabian work visa and IQAMA. Germany's Skilled Worker Visa came in third among the analyzed guides.
What does this ranking actually tell us?
However, caution is advised when interpreting the figures.
The statistics measure the number of visits to visa guides on VisaAtlas.org . This is neither a global statistic of all visa applications nor proof that the Opportunity Map is the most frequently applied-for work visa worldwide.
Nevertheless, the figures are remarkable. They show which immigration programs potential migrants are particularly interested in during their research.
Germany has a prominent presence in this context. Among the most frequently accessed visa guides are the opportunities map, the German Skilled Worker Visa, the EU Blue Card, and options for freelancers.
Why is the opportunity map so interesting internationally?
The basic idea behind the opportunity map is relatively simple: Qualified people should be able to come to Germany to look for a job on site without having to have a German employment contract before entering the country .
This is precisely where a key difference lies compared to many classic residence permits for employment.
International skilled worker immigration often presents a practical problem: German employers want to get to know applicants first or expect them to already be in Germany. At the same time, foreign applicants for traditional job titles generally need a concrete job offer.
The opportunity map is intended to close this gap.
How does the opportunity map work?
The legal requirements can be found in particular in Section 20a of the Residence Act.
There are generally different pathways to access the opportunity card. Those already considered skilled workers under the Residence Act can gain access to the card under simplified conditions. In addition, there is the well-known points system, which takes into account factors such as qualifications, professional experience, language skills, age, and ties to Germany.
Additional requirements must also be met. In particular, the securing of one's livelihood must generally be guaranteed during the job search.
The opportunity card is therefore not a "visa for everyone". However, it creates an independent pathway to Germany for certain qualified individuals, without requiring them to have a specific German employer before entering the country.
The actual number of visa issuances also shows considerable interest.
International online interest is not purely theoretical.
According to official information from the portal “Make it in Germany”, a total of 11,497 visas were issued based on the Chance Card between the launch of the Chance Card on June 1, 2024 and June 15, 2025 .
India was by far in the lead with 3,721 visas issued, followed by China with 807 and Turkey with 654.
At the same time, the actual number initially remained below the originally projected figures. This reveals an interesting discrepancy: the opportunity map enjoys enormous international attention, yet the number of visas actually issued is significantly smaller than the number of people who appear to be interested in the program.
Germany is particularly visible internationally.
Therefore, it is not only the position of the chance card itself that is remarkable.
Other German immigration options also enjoy high visibility among international applicants. Germany thus appears to have achieved a strong position in the international competition for skilled workers, at least in terms of attracting the attention of potential migrants .
The opportunity map has a particular advantage: the concept is easy to communicate internationally.
“Come to Germany and look for a job” is a much simpler message than the complex requirements of many classic German residence permits.
Whether the opportunity map will achieve comparable significance in the long term with regard to actual immigration figures remains to be seen. However, current data already show that the opportunity map has become one of the most visible products of German immigration law internationally.
VISAGUARD advises international professionals on the Opportunities Card as well as on alternative options such as the EU Blue Card and other residence permits for employment in Germany.
