1. Health insurance for Schengen visa
Anyone applying for a Schengen visa for a short stay of up to 90 days in the Schengen area must provide proof of travel health insurance . This requirement arises directly from Article 15 of Regulation (EC) No. 810/2009 (Visa Code) and is one of the basic requirements for visa issuance. Exceptions to this requirement are only granted in a few special cases, such as for diplomats or certain family members of EU citizens with the right of free movement. It is particularly important to note that even if a declaration of commitment is provided, it does not replace health insurance – both forms of proof are legally required independently of each other.
The insurance can be purchased either by the applicant themselves or by a third party —such as the host or a company. Companies and hosts can also purchase travel health insurance for the invited person. However, for reasons of transparency, this must be clearly stated in the documents submitted to the embassy.
2. Scope of health insurance
The health insurance requirements for Schengen visas are strictly regulated. The health insurance must be valid for the entire planned stay and for all Schengen states that are to be visited. In particular, it must cover the costs of regular medical treatment and medically necessary repatriation to the home country. The costs of any repatriation in the event of illness or death, as well as the costs of emergency medical assistance and/or emergency admission, must also be included. The minimum coverage for travel health insurance for a Schengen visa is €30,000 , which is expressly regulated in Article 15, Paragraph 3, Sentence 2 of the UK . In cases of travel for the purpose of medical treatment, separate evidence of reimbursement of medical treatment or therapy costs must also be provided.
In practice, it is often observed that insurance policies are rejected if the insurance policy reveals a problematic weighting of individual risks such that certain types of services (e.g. repatriation, emergency dental treatment, etc.) are only covered with manifestly insufficient amounts. Insurance policies with inadequate benefits, for example in the case of COVID illness or with an unreasonably high deductible , are also usually not recognized. Policies with a limited period of validity that do not cover the entire stay are also not sufficient. Although the insurance does not have to cover the additional period of 15 days at the end of the visa validity ( Article 24 of the Visa Code ), it does have to cover the actual length of stay requested. Applicants should therefore, in their own interest, choose a flexible policy that seamlessly covers the entire period from arrival to departure.

3. Recognized health insurance Schengen visa
Unfortunately, there's no general answer to the question of which health insurance policies are sufficient for a Schengen visa, as health insurance must generally be taken out in your home country and different insurance policies exist in each country. However, almost all German embassies offer information on recognized health insurance policies for a Schengen visa on their websites .
A list of recognized travel health insurance providers can be found at the following German embassies:
If in doubt, you should check with your embassy regarding the recognition of your health insurance. Embassies often have lists of recognized travel health insurance providers, which they will provide to applicants upon request .
4. Proof of health insurance Schengen visa
Applicants should generally take out insurance in the country of their residence. Proof of insurance, either the original or a copy, must be submitted with the application. This proof will then be added to the visa file. The insurance details are also technically stored in the visa system. For multiple entries, it is sufficient to initially provide proof of insurance coverage for only the first stay. However, the applicant must confirm in writing that they will also take out appropriate insurance for subsequent stays.
After submitting the insurance policy, the diplomatic missions will also examine, in particular, whether the insurance is legally enforceable in an EU member state, i.e., whether any claims against the insurance company can be asserted in a Schengen state ( Article 15, Paragraph 5 of the Visa Code ). The recovery of an insured sum can be considered guaranteed if the insurance company has a branch in a Schengen state or if a cooperation agreement exists with an insurance company from a Schengen state that covers the claims. If this is not possible, the diplomatic missions will in most cases give the applicant the opportunity to submit new or supplementary proof.

5. FAQ
What health insurance is required for a Schengen visa?
Travel health insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 is required for a Schengen visa. It must be valid for all Schengen states and cover services such as emergency medical care, medically necessary repatriation, and, if necessary, repatriation.
How comprehensive must the insurance coverage be for a Schengen visa?
The insurance must cover the entire requested period of stay without any gaps. Policies with limited validity, insufficient repatriation coverage, or high deductibles are not sufficient. Medical treatment in the event of COVID-19 or dental emergencies must also be covered.
Can hosts or companies cover health insurance?
Yes, hosts or companies may purchase travel health insurance for the invited guest. However, this must be clearly stated in the application documents so that the diplomatic mission can recognize and accept the coverage.
6. Conclusion
Travel health insurance is a mandatory requirement for obtaining a Schengen visa and must meet strict requirements both in terms of content and form. According to the Visa Code, the policy must have a minimum coverage amount of 30,000 euros, cover all Schengen states, and, in particular, include costs for medical emergencies and medically necessary repatriation. Although recognition varies in practice, German diplomatic missions abroad regularly require proof of legally enforceable insurance, i.e., a policy with a headquarters or cooperation structure in the Schengen area. Applicants should therefore check early on whether the chosen insurance is recognized by the responsible embassy and ensure that the coverage is comprehensive and covers the entire travel period. To avoid unnecessary delays in the visa process, it is advisable to obtain information about recognized insurance providers in advance on the website of the responsible diplomatic mission abroad. A carefully selected and complete proof of insurance significantly increases the chances of a visa application being successful.
