Anyone wishing to apply for German citizenship must demonstrate basic knowledge of Germany's political system, society, and history . A key component of this process is the naturalization test – and this is now much easier to organize in Berlin: Appointments can be booked online and are available throughout Berlin.

Naturalization test – What is tested?

The naturalization test consists of 33 multiple-choice questions. Topics include democracy, fundamental rights, equality, religious freedom, and German history. Those who answer at least 17 questions correctly pass. For many, the test is a prerequisite for naturalization— except for children under 16, people with disabilities, or serious illnesses , provided this is confirmed by a medical certificate. As an alternative to the naturalization test, the State Office for Immigration (LEA) also accepts other proof of civic knowledge. These include, for example, certain school qualifications. Anyone unsure should contact the LEA or an advice center for further information.

How to register for the naturalization test

Registration for the naturalization test is now digital and straightforward:

  • You can book an appointment at a Berlin adult education center (VHS) via the Berlin Service Portal – regardless of where you live.

  • Registration takes place on-site at the adult education center (VHS), where participants complete the registration form .

  • The examination fee of 25 euros must be paid directly upon registration.

  • After payment you will receive a booking confirmation , which must be presented on the day of the exam.

Important: The test will not take place on the day of registration – the VHS will inform you of the next possible exam date upon registration.
