Lost plastic residence permit card: What now?

The moment you reach into your pocket and find nothing, it triggers a feeling of unease in most people. If it's your wallet and cash, that's annoying – but if your electronic residence permit (eAT) has gone missing, the worry goes far beyond the financial loss . The eAT is much more than just a plastic ID card; it's legally valid proof of residency in Germany and often the key to work, travel, and dealing with government agencies. In a metropolis like Berlin, where the State Office for Immigration (LEA) processes thousands of cases daily, swift and legally correct action is now paramount. Anyone who loses their eAT or becomes a victim of theft suddenly finds themselves confronted with bureaucratic hurdles that, if handled incorrectly, can have far-reaching consequences.

The immediate reporting obligation and the protection of your data

As soon as you discover that your electronic residence permit (eAT) is missing, legal obligations arise that cannot be postponed. The loss should be reported to the immigration office immediately . In Berlin, this is the State Office for Immigration . If the card has been stolen, the first step is to go to the police to file a theft report. This report is not only important for your own protection but also serves as proof to the State Office for Immigration (LEA) as to why a new document must be issued.

An often underestimated aspect is the online ID function of the eAT (electronic residence permit). If you have activated this function, there is a risk of identity theft if your card is lost. To protect yourself, you should have the function deactivated immediately via the nationwide blocking hotline 116 116. For this, you will need your blocking password, which was sent to you in the original PIN letter before the card was issued. If you no longer have this password, blocking by phone is not possible; in this case, you must appear in person at the LEA (State Office for Foreigners) to arrange the blocking on-site. An appointment must be scheduled via the LEA's contact form , and you will need to have your passport ready for identification.

The path to the new document: The procedure at LEA Berlin

Simply reporting the loss unfortunately does not replace the document itself. You are required to apply for a new electronic residence permit (eAT) . Legally, this process is based, among other things, on Section 57a of the Residence Ordinance (AufenthV) , which regulates the technical and procedural aspects of the electronic residence permit. In Berlin, the reissuance is technically treated like a "transfer." This means you must obtain an appointment at the LEA (State Office for Immigration and Asylum), which is usually scheduled for transferring a residence permit to a new passport.

During the appointment, the authorities will check whether the requirements for reissuance are met – primarily proof of loss or theft. If you unexpectedly find the card after reporting it as lost, caution is advised. Unlocking the online function is only possible in person and only if the LEA (State Office for Migration and Refugees) has not yet ordered a new card from the Federal Printing Office. As soon as the printing process for the replacement document has been initiated, the old card becomes permanently invalid. Blocking the card is free of charge; however, a small fee of between €3.00 and €6.00 applies for subsequent reactivation, depending on the cardholder's age.

Special case: If only the additional sheet is missing

A common source of confusion arises when not the plastic card itself, but the accompanying green supplementary sheet is lost. This sheet often contains important additional information , such as the conditions under which employment is permitted. In this specific case, we can put your mind at ease: The loss of the supplementary sheet does not need to be reported to the police or the immigration office for blocking, as the sheet has no electronic functions. However, you will still need a valid original for everyday use. In Berlin, the supplementary sheet can only be reissued by the LEA ( State Office for Immigration and Asylum), and an appointment must be scheduled via the online contact form.

Conclusion on restoring legal certainty

Losing your electronic residence permit is undoubtedly stressful, but it can be managed with a structured approach. Reporting the loss to the police, immediately blocking your online access, and promptly applying for a replacement at the LEA Berlin (State Office for Immigration and Asylum) ensures your identity remains protected and your residency status is fully documented. It's crucial to act proactively and not wait until you urgently need the document for travel or a job change.
