Foreign students or language learners who wish to come to Germany to study or learn often need a so-called blocked account . This special account is a key component in the visa process, as it serves as proof to the immigration authorities and German embassies that their livelihood in Germany is secure.

But what exactly is a blocked account? In banking, it's an account that can only be accessed with restrictions—specifically, only with the consent of a third party. In visa-related cases, this "third party" is the responsible immigration authority . This means that the amount deposited into the blocked account can only be withdrawn in monthly installments—usually, this amount corresponds to the current maximum BAföG (student financial aid) rate . This is intended to ensure that the foreign national has sufficient financial resources at his or her disposal for the entire duration of their stay in Germany.

Formally, immigration law stipulates that the blocked account be set up in the name of the person concerned. The so-called blocking notice—that is, the restriction on access to the balance—must be registered in favor of the public body to which the immigration authority belongs. Only 1/12 of the total amount may then be paid out monthly.

The amount of the security deposit is published annually by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Students who book a so-called "service package" from a student union can reduce the amount – provided the package includes, for example, accommodation costs.

This may initially seem complicated for many applicants. However, the blocked account not only serves as a bureaucratic hurdle, but also provides both parties—you and the authorities—with the assurance that your stay is financially viable.
