Current problems and waiting times for visa applications from Turkey

Applying for a German visa from Turkey has become a frustrating and stressful process for many people. Families , students , business travelers , skilled workers , and even investors have long reported overburdened consulates and months-long waiting times . Currently, the waiting time for Schengen visas in Turkey is around four to six months, while D visas can take up to five months. As demand increases, the procedures seem ever more cumbersome and opaque. Many of those affected are now wondering why these delays are causing them and why the situation isn't improving. Dr. Martin Manzel conducted an insightful interview with journalist Özlem Gürses on this issue, the contents of which we summarize here for you.

Structural deficiencies and organizational overload

A key reason for the long processing times lies in the structure of the German visa procedures themselves. While digital processes have long been established in Turkey, the German administration at its embassies and consulates continues to rely heavily on paper . Files are printed, sorted, and manually reviewed. This inevitably leads to even minor bottlenecks causing significant delays . Added to this is a clear shortage of qualified personnel who cannot handle the increasing number of applications. Many applicants thus get the impression that their requests are being deliberately delayed. In reality, the problem is primarily structural and reflects the need for modernization within German authorities abroad.

This problem is particularly evident in the area of Schengen visas . Although these are only for short-term stays, the broad discretion afforded to the authorities regularly leads to swift rejections. Applicants without clearly identifiable ties to Turkey are often assessed very harshly (see lack of intent to return ). In many cases, the decision is based on an assessment of "credibility" rather than on clear legal guidelines. As a result, even well-prepared applications for family celebrations, business trips, or cultural events are delayed or rejected.

Contradiction between the need for skilled workers and actual practice

The situation is different with national visas (D visas): Here, legal entitlements exist, and political interference is excluded. Nevertheless, these procedures are also characterized by considerable delays. People sometimes wait for months just for an initial appointment , and couples seeking family reunification often experience over a year of forced separation before the authorities even begin the review process. While the legal requirements provide a clear framework, practical implementation remains problematic due to structural deficiencies.

The situation appears particularly contradictory for skilled workers and investors. Germany is actively recruiting workers worldwide, especially in the technical, medical, and skilled trades sectors. At the same time, the actual implementation of visa procedures is causing these very groups to be held back by months of waiting . Many lose career opportunities during this period or decide against Germany altogether because they cannot bear the uncertainty of the process. This harms both those affected and the German labor market, which is urgently dependent on skilled foreign workers.

Conclusion: Visa procedures urgently need reform.

The current situation clearly demonstrates that Germany's visa system for Turkey has reached its limits. Inefficient processes, a lack of digitalization, and insufficient staffing are leading to waiting times that are neither in line with the needs of the people nor with Germany's economic interests. Those affected need patience, thorough preparation, and often legal support to protect their chances in the application process. At the same time, it is clear that only structural reforms can bring about long-term improvement. Germany must align its own political goals—especially the need for skilled migration—with a modern, reliable, and transparent visa system. Until this is achieved, applying for a visa from Turkey will remain a cumbersome and unpredictable process for many.
